WORLD POLIO DAY (WPD)
GOALS ANG EVENTS
Reach your goal of increasing club participation in WPD
By Clare Monroe, PolioPlus senior engagement specialist.
WPD on 24 October is quickly approaching! Last year 10% of Rotary and Rotaract clubs registered an event for WPD. One of the goals this year for me as EPNC is to increase the number of clubs in zone 17 that participate in a WPD activity by at least 5 %.
To reach this goal I ask you to work with me or your district leaders to ensure that clubs are planning and registering WPD events.
You can:
- Share the event planning guide to offer suggestions for types of events if clubs haven’t started planning their World Polio Day events
- Encourage clubs and districts to visit the Rotary Brand Center for graphics, videos, public relations templates, and more
- Ask club and district leaders to register their events
Let´s show the world that Rotary´s commitment to polio eradication is stronger than ever by registering more events in 2024.
Lauri Mouna, D1430 DRFCC, have translated a campaign plan, please find attached, into English and the plan is freely available to ZONE, of course shaped according to the conditions in the countries.
Please spread this information in your district and try to convince rotarians and non rotarians to join PolioPlus Society (PPS), all donations are more than welcome. If you need any assistance concerning Polio, our PolioPlus fund or PPS don´t hesitate to contact me.

THE ERADICATION OF POLIO FROM THE WORLD CONTINUES
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres vaccinates children
The PolioPlus community, whose members include Rotary International (RI), the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Vaccine Alliance (Gavi), is committed to eradicating polio worldwide.
Since Rotary's role in the process is central, it is RI's will that the project be completed and not abandoned.
It is also about our organisation's reputation as a reliable partner.
Funds are needed to be raised further because through the PolioPlus community €400 million Children receive comprehensive vaccinations annually in countries whose own health care services are not yet able to carry out vaccinations comprehensively.
In addition, the PolioPlus Community Rapid Response Teams are organising emergency vaccinations, as was the case last year in Ukraine and this fall in Gaza, where 640,000 children were vaccinated due to outbreaks of polio.
At the same time, let's remember that the our own country health care service vaccinates all newborns 4 times during the first few years of life to ensure that we do not develop polio disease.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has pledged to triple Rotarian support up to 100 MUS annually.
The Rotary Foundation and RI want full support to be achieved annually in order to achieve maximum benefit. That means our Rotarian support of 50 MUS $ per year.
There are 1.2 million Rotarians in the world, so for a single Rotarian that means 35 € in support per year.
To achieve this goal, our District Rotary Foundation Committee again appeals to the will of members to help.
One of Rotary's mottos is "Service above self", translated as "Service above self".
We want to reformulate the translation and organize a charity fundraiser among members.
Themed: "Help before pampering yourself"
PolioPlus Day is 24.10.2024, week 43.
During week 43, when you organize a nice event for ourselves or our friends, such as watching an ice hockey game, going to the theatre, enjoying the opera or a tasty dinner, could you give the same amount to the foundation for polio elimination?
Even with a small donation, we can achieve big things.
One vaccine costs 60 cents thanks to the PolioPlus system. Of this 60 cents, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has paid 40 cents.
So, our share is 20 cents.
By donating, e.g. For 20 €, you have basically given 100 children the opportunity to lead a normal life without fear of polio.
So. a lot can be achieved with a really small amount!
IMPLEMENTATION OF COLLECTION.
The simplest method is to donate the desired amount individually through MyRotary. In this case, the payment is directed to the destination and the PHF points are guaranteed to accrue to the donor.
Another way is for the club to collect funds from its members using a reference appropriate to the club's account and transfer them to the Foundation account.
